Sadaqat-ul-Fitr
The Prophet – peace and blessings of Allah be upon him-recommended various different items to give in Sadaqat-ul-Fitr, also known as Zakātul Fitr. The values of these items vary. One of the potential wisdoms in this is that it gives people the flexibility to give something suitable for their situation. Below are approximate values of the some of the items mentioned by him:
Wheat 1.75kg: £3.90
Barley 3.5kg: tbc
Raisins 3.5kg: tbc
Dates 3.5kg: tbc
Zakatul Fitr must be paid by a wealthy person on behalf of themselves and all their dependants, young and old. Technically a person can give the smaller amount – wheat – if that’s all they can comfortably afford, but we recommend people give according to their financial situation and give from a higher band if they can afford to do so. For example, it would be befitting of an affluent person to give Zakatul Fitr at £20+ per person in their household, although it would technically be sufficient even if they gave the smaller amount.
The £6 recommendation printed on our calendar is based on the historical norms in our community and an estimation of the average member of our community. It loosely fits the second category from hadith mentioned above.
Please pay your Zakatul Fitr as early as possible so that your donation reaches the needy in time for Eid.
